What about Angels?

If there is one hot topic spiritually among Americans today it is angels. There are seminars about angels. There are more books written about angels in secular bookstores than about any other topic. We have T-shirts, plates, calendars, jewelry, and even toilet paper depicting these creatures. Why are angels so popular in today's culture? Better yet, what does the Bible teach about angels?

Angels are personal beings

1.  Angels possess intelligence.

        1 Peter 1:2

2.  Angels possess feelings.

        Luke 2:13

3.  Angels possess a will.

        Jude 6

4.  Angels are spirit beings.

Even though angels are spirit beings, they are limited in their power in comparison to God. They are limited to their angelic bodies.

                Hebrews 1:14

5.  Angels are never born.

        Mark 12:25

6.  Angels never die.

        Luke 20:36

7.  In the Bible angels are always depicted as males.

        Genesis 18:1-2

        Luke 24:4-8

8.  Some angels do have wings with which they use to fly.

        Isaiah 6:2

9.  Angels are innumerable.

        Hebrews 12:22

Angels are well-organized

10.  Michael is an archangel. (Jude 9)

There may be other designations for other angels (Daniel 10:13).

Angelic beings may also have other functions (Ephesians 3:10).

What about guardian Angels?

11.  The Bible seems to indicate a strong possibility that there are guardian angels.

Believers seem to have a guardian angel assigned to them (Hebrews 1:14).

Children may also have guardian angels (Matthew 18:10).

The ministry of Angels

12.   The angels ministered to Christ during his incarnation and earthly ministry.

Angels predicted his birth (Luke 1:16-23).

Angels announced his birth (Luke 2:13).

Angels protected Jesus when he was a baby (Matthew 2:13).

After he was tempted in the wilderness, angels strengthened him (Matthew 4:11).

They ministered to him in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:43).

They announced his resurrection (Matthew 28:1-7).

12.   Angels are also very active in ministering to all believers as well.

        They help believers (Hebrews 1:14).

Many times Angels are involved in answering prayer (Acts 12:7; Daniel 10).

Angels also give us encouragement in times of need (Acts 27:23-24).

Angels care for believers at death (Luke 16:22; Jude 9).

How should we respond to angels?

Angels are very powerful and intelligent creatures who assist the believer while he is on earth. We need to remember to attribute all the praise and glory to the Creator, not the created angelic beings. We should give thanks to God for angels and what they are doing in our lives.
